Useful clothing sample feedback explains what changed, where the issue occurs and what decision is required. A series of disconnected messages can leave the factory unsure which instruction is current. Consolidate feedback into one revision list linked to the sample and tech pack version.
Identify the sample before commenting
Record style code, sample version, size, material reference and review date. Note any substitutions already declared by the supplier. A first fit sample in substitute fabric should not be mistaken for approval of final colour, drape or decoration.
Review the sample against the same specification used to make it. Separate an error against the brief from a new design preference. Both can require action, but they may have different effects on cost and schedule.
Make every comment actionable
- Location: identify the panel, seam or point of measure.
- Observation: explain the visible or measured issue.
- Reference: attach a marked photograph or drawing.
- Requested outcome: state the target or ask the pattern team for a proposal.
- Priority: distinguish a production blocker from an optional change.
For example, “sleeve opening measures 19 cm against the approved 18 cm target” is clearer than “sleeve too wide”. For fit problems, describe the wearer movement and where pulling occurs instead of prescribing a pattern change without enough information.
Consolidate approvals and unresolved items
Assign one person to send the final comment list. Mark each item approved, revise or awaiting decision. Ask the supplier to confirm understanding and identify any conflict between the requested changes. Record whether a change requires a new sample or another defined form of evidence.
Before production, match the final sample to the revised specification and close the earlier comments. A corrected garment with an outdated chart still creates uncertainty for the production team.
Questions during revision rounds
Should every change trigger another sample?
Assess the effect on fit, material, construction and appearance. Agree the evidence needed to approve each change rather than assuming a photograph always suffices.
Can feedback be sent in several messages?
Discussion can happen that way, but issue a consolidated version for action and mark previous instructions as superseded.
Start with the tech pack checklist, review the schedule dependencies, and share your current sample comments.
