A golf quarter-zip is a layering garment, so its fit should be checked over the clothing it is meant to cover. Approving it on its own can miss restriction across the shoulders or excess bulk at the neck. Define the intended use and underlying layer before developing the pattern.
Set the layering and movement brief
Identify the expected base layer, seasonal use and silhouette. Record chest, shoulder or raglan measurements, sleeve, body length, hem and neck opening. Use the intended underlayer during fitting and check reaching and rotation. Note whether the garment should stay close to the body or offer a relaxed outer-layer fit.
Photograph movement-related problems from several angles. A sleeve that rides up may reflect a pattern or armhole issue, not simply a need to add sleeve length.
Specify the zip and neckline together
- Define zip opening length and the visible hardware appearance.
- Confirm slider and puller references, tape colour and any protective detail.
- Check the top stop and collar edge for contact with the neck.
- Review whether the opening lies flat when partly open.
- Agree the appearance of zip seams on the front and reverse.
Approve the actual component on the garment. A zip sample on a desk cannot show whether the tape and fabric feed evenly or whether the opening ripples.
Match fabric and seams to the layer
Compare weight, surface, stretch and recovery on the intended construction. Ask what the finish is meant to achieve and what evidence would support any performance claim. Check seam bulk, interior comfort and the interaction between body fabric, cuffs and hem components.
Run the agreed care review with the zip and decoration in place. Look for dimensional change, surface changes and distortion around the opening. Keep the material reference with the approved sample so later substitutions are visible.
Approve the coordinated range
Should the quarter-zip match the polo colour exactly?
Decide whether exact matching or a coordinated contrast is intended. Different materials need a physical comparison under agreed lighting.
Can chest branding use the same placement as a polo?
Use the polo as a reference, then check the relationship to the zip, panel seams and finished garment proportions.
Coordinate materials with your polo fabric brief, and submit the quarter-zip reference with the intended base layer and size range.
