The collar and placket give a golf polo much of its identity. A good body fabric can still produce an unconvincing shirt if the collar rolls awkwardly or the opening pulls off centre. Review these components as part of a finished sample, both worn and laid flat.

Specify the collar appearance you want

Identify whether the reference uses a rib collar, self-fabric collar or another construction. Record finished dimensions, the intended point shape and how the collar should sit when buttoned and open. A photograph should be supported by dimensions because camera angle can disguise proportions.

Check the collar attachment and interior neckline for neatness and comfort. Where stabilising materials are used, ask what was selected and review its effect on stiffness. Avoid instructing the factory to make a collar “premium” without explaining the desired shape and feel.

Measure the placket as a complete assembly

  • Confirm finished width, length and position relative to the centre front.
  • Review the overlap and how the lower end is reinforced.
  • Check button size, spacing, thread and buttonhole appearance.
  • Inspect alignment with stripes, repeats or other design features.
  • Try the opening for dressing comfort and check how it sits during movement.

Small deviations can become obvious when the placket is contrasted against the body fabric. Agree the measurement method and acceptable variation before inspection rather than deciding at shipment that the appearance is wrong.

Assess appearance after the intended care process

Review whether the collar shape, placket edges and body fabric remain visually compatible after washing. Record the wash and drying conditions used for the review. If different components change differently, the resulting ripple or twist may require a material or construction adjustment.

Keep the approved sample with its specification. Do not approve a corrected collar verbally while leaving the old drawing and measurement chart in circulation.

Common sampling decisions

Can collar shape be judged from a flat photograph?

A photograph helps document an issue, but review the physical sample on the intended wearer or fit form as well. Shape and stiffness affect how the collar stands.

Does a contrasting collar require separate colour approval?

Identify each component and approve the intended relationship under agreed lighting. Different materials can make the same colour reference appear different.

Combine this review with the golf polo fabric checklist. Share your collar reference and sample comments for a development discussion.
