Custom board shorts need a clear brief because beachwear, leisure shorts and activity-focused designs can use different waist constructions, linings and pocket details. Identify how the garment will be worn before choosing a visual reference. A catalogue name alone does not establish functional suitability.
Define length, movement and waistband
Specify waist, rise, hip, inseam, outseam and leg opening with diagrams. Identify a fixed, elastic or hybrid waistband and the intended closure. Review walking, sitting and the movement relevant to the design. Check the opening, fly and seams for pressure or restriction.
If a drawcord or hardware is included, confirm its specification and suitability for the intended wearer and market. Review the actual construction, not only a digital mock-up.
Compare fabric and interior construction
Request composition, weave or knit, weight, stretch, finish and colour or print route. Review surface feel and opacity in the conditions relevant to the product. If drying performance is a selling point, define the evidence required rather than assuming every lightweight synthetic fabric meets the claim.
- State whether a lining is included and identify its material and fit.
- Define pocket bags, closures and any drainage-related construction.
- Check seam finishing against the skin.
- Approve the complete garment after the intended care review.
Control print placement and size grading
For repeat prints, confirm repeat scale and whether seam matching is required. For engineered artwork, show the position on each panel and discuss how the layout changes across sizes. Ask for a strike-off on the chosen material before approving the printed bulk fabric.
Check the sample from the front, back and side. A graphic may look balanced on one panel but become awkward where it crosses seams or pockets. Mark acceptable variation explicitly instead of relying on the supplier to infer the intended layout.
Questions for beachwear development
Can one artwork layout fit every size?
Confirm the grading and panel relationship. A fixed graphic size and a graded placement can create different results.
Does a quick-dry label confirm water-use performance?
No. Define the intended use and each relevant property separately, then agree the appropriate evidence and checks.
Review drying claims and send your shorts drawings and print files with the intended activity and quantity matrix.
